The Network for a Healthy California—African American Campaign (Network) and Farm Fresh Choice, a program of the Ecology Center, will unveil a newly expanded fresh produce stand for Berkeley residents on Tuesday, June 26 from 3 – 9 pm at the Spiral Gardens.  Centrally located on the corner of Sacramento and Oregon streets, the produce stand is the latest effort launched in Berkeley geared towards improving the health of residents by encouraging them to “bring healthy back.” Celebrity Chef Nikki Shaw, a finalist on the Food Network’s Next Food Network Star, will be on hand at the grand re-opening event to show residents how to make traditional meals with a healthy twist. Community organizations will also be on hand to provide families tips and tools they need to stay active and healthy. The produce stand will be open weekly on Tuesdays from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the location following the event.

African Americans suffer disproportionately from preventable chronic diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer. In California, 68 percent of African Americans are overweight or obese. And the situation is no better in Alameda County where 60 percent of African Americans are overweight or obese. Decreasing the consumption of fried foods and sugary beverages and increasing the daily amounts of fruits and vegetables and physical activity can lead to big improvements in health. The Network partners with community organizations like the Ecology Center to help empower residents to make healthy changes that may help reduce the risk of developing serious health problems. The Berkeley produce stand provides increased access to healthier foods, which encourages healthier eating.

Join the Network and Farm Fresh Foods during this event to:

  • Enjoy a food demonstration by Celebrity Chef Nikki Shaw to show families how to cook traditional foods that are healthier and taste great at 3:30 p.m.
  • Visit a host of booths providing residents with information about valuable services available in the Berkeley community
  • Meet Network staff providing participants with healthy tips and recipes from the Soulful Recipes cookbook
  • Fun family activities and more…
