TMI Food Group to hold its 9th annual Chef One Dumpling Eating Contest on Saturday, September 15 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Smorgasburg, located at 27 North 6th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211. Proceeds from this annual event benefit Food Bank For New York City.
Last year, TMI raised $44,200 for the Food Bank, which provided 230,000 meals to assist the 1.4 million people in New York that rely on soup kitchens and food pantries. TMI will be donating at least $40,000 to the Food Bank again this year.
“Food Bank For New York City is very grateful to TMI Food Group for their ongoing support and for helping to bring much needed visibility to the issue of hunger in New York City,” said Margarette Purvis, President & CEO, Food Bank For New York City. “This year alone, New York City’s food pantries and soup kitchens have lost 11 million meals due to federal spending cuts in the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) while three million New Yorkers struggle just to put food on the table. The funds raised by this event will certainly help.”
The event is open to the public and admission is free. Registration for the contest is $20.00 and is open to both men and women. The deadline for registration is September 5, 2012. More than 50 men and women participated in the dumpling-eating contest last year, consuming more than 1,000 dumplings.
The first place winner of each the men’s and women’s division will receive $1,000, second place, $500 and third place, $300. The man and woman that eat the most dumplings in two minutes also will receive the same number of East River Ferry tickets as the number of dumplings eaten. Last year the winning man ate 69 dumplings, while the winning lady ate 37.
Attendees who do not participate in the contest can still help support the Food Bank. Proceeds from dumplings purchased at the Chef One dumpling booth also will go to the Food Bank. Everyone who purchases dumplings will be entered into a drawing to win East River Ferry tickets.
